Background

I graduated LLB(Hons) from Auckland University and was admitted in 1975. I then worked at Kensington Swan and its predecessors, as a partner for 23 years. When I left in 2002 I was head of the firm’s large litigation section. I have practised as a Barrister and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2007.

From 36 years of practice, I am experienced in all areas of the law, at every Court level, in most specialist tribunals and in numerous arbitrations and mediations.

My speciality areas of resource management, public and administrative law are in addition to an extensive civil litigation practice. I also specialise in valuation, land acquisition/compensation and property disputes.

I have acted in major resource management cases, including large infrastructure projects and windfarms. I routinely appear in the Environment Court and High Court, and have argued leading cases in the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. A listing of my recent cases is attached.

I am convener of the ADLS Inc’s Resource Management & Environment Committee. I write commentary on the High Court Rules for Sims Court Practice, and am co-authoring a new text on environmental law.
